The prestigious award recognizes research, innovation, and entrepreneurial leadership

Columbus, OH – April 15, 2021
ExonanoRNA, LLC, today announced that Dr. Peixuan Guo, Chairman and Founder, has received the prestigious Innovator of the Year Award 2021 from the Ohio State University. This award recognizes an Ohio State researcher who works actively to promote the commercialization of the university’s intellectual proper through invention disclosures, patents received, technology licensing, and entrepreneurism. Dr. Guo is currently the Sylvan G. Frank Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery Systems in the College of Pharmacy at the Ohio State University. He continues to make an economic impact on the central Ohio region with his ongoing RNA nanotechnology research and entrepreneur spirit with ExonanoRNA.

As the leader in the RNA nanotechnology field with over twenty-five years of excellence and innovation, Dr. Guo stated in his acceptance speech to thank the Ohio State’s Office of Research, the Office of Innovation and Economic Development, members of the Innovation Award Committee, and leaders of the College of Pharmacy, “Without the diligent work and cohesive effort of my students, postdocs, and many other colleagues throughout the years, and the support from Ohio State and the James Cancer Center, none of this would have been possible.” He also stated, “For several decades, we expected that RNA would be the third milestone in pharmaceutical drug development. Now, the time has finally come, so I look forward to continuing to work with everyone to welcome the dawn of RNA therapeutics.”

As early as 1987, Dr. Guo proposed that there were a large number of novel small RNAs in cells that have not been discovered and named it “small RNA (sRNA)” (Guo P et al. A small viral RNA is required for in-vitro packaging of bacteriophage phi29 DNA Science 1987;236:690). Since proving the concept of RNA nanotechnology in 1998, Dr. Guo’s innovation has been the foundational research for critical therapeutics and treatments of various cancers. Nam D. Vo, the newly appointed CEO of ExonanoRNA, stated, “We are honored to have Dr. Guo as the founder and Chairman ExonanoRNA – and also as the 2021 recipient of this Ohio State prestigious award.” He added, “The team has seen firsthand his vision of RNA nanotechnology become reality in our company since inception in 2018, and we continue to move forward in our drug development and R&D along with large scale production for drug delivery to capture such innovation and realization of the vision. We are very proud of Dr. Guo!”

Founded in 2018, ExonanoRNA received its status as a University Technology Commercialization Company (UTCC) from the Ohio State’s Office of Research earlier this year, 2021, and continues to collaborate closely with the university in innovation and advancement of the RNA nanotechnology field.
